1. Get the leadership involved
Procedures for digital alerts should be communicated to management and staff members at your facility. Ensure that your leadership is aware of the strategy and can direct individuals to a secure location while encouraging them to check your digital signage or mobile app for up-to-date information.
2. Have a backup
You may have a primary employee responsible for managing your digital signage or app on a day-to-day basis; however, can you guarantee that this employee will be available in the event of an emergency? Train a few staff members on the correct procedure to follow if you cannot access your content management system to send out the alert. For instance, the employee who manages your content daily may be out to lunch when a fire alarm is activated or when a tornado is moving in the direction of your location.
3. Visibility is crucial
Your signs should already be posted in high-traffic areas, but if an emergency alert is aired, the message must be blatantly obvious and impossible to miss. For instance, if you usually write your messages in muted tones, you should craft your urgent communications using graphics and words that flash in a range of vivid hues. Make sure your app users know how to enable the “emergency” notification tags on their devices and/or how to access the button within the app that checks for new notifications.
