STEEL DYNAMICS BOOSTS MORALE AND STREAMLINES COMMUNICATION WITH DIGITAL SIGNAGE

Digital signage is one of the most flexible communication systems a company can implement for internal communications. Using digital signage to communicate internally with staff can yield many benefits, such as greater workplace productivity, higher morale, and a more informed base. Such an example can be found in Steel Dynamics, one of the “largest and most diversified domestic steel producers and metal recyclers in the United States.” Partnering with REACH Media Network back in November, the company has since expanded to multiple locations and plans to further its digital signage initiatives at even more offices across the nation. Implementing internal signage displays in multiple different areas, the company has been able to boost morale while also streamlining certain communication processes to keep workers engaged and informed. With continued expansion, the company has let its creativity flourish and has allowed individual departments to have control over their messaging, leading to a constant flow of communication.

THE SOLUTION

Before implementing REACH Media Network, Steel Dynamics was using a solution that was too expensive for what they felt they were getting out of it, totaling about $1500 a year. At their newer location in Butler, IN, they were even using an in-house solution but still felt they could get more out of digital displays. After learning about REACH Media Network through a sister company and hearing how cost-effective they were, Steel Dynamics decided to partner with them. Since then, Steel Dynamics has implemented nearly 37 players at the Butler location alone, with additional displays at other locations and future expansion in the works. The company’s initial initiative focused on implementing these players in breakrooms to disseminate general safety topics, meeting availability, and overall morale-boosting content. In fact, this has resulted in each department having control of their messaging in addition to company-wide playlists, offering both wide-reaching and individualized content tailoring.

THE RESULTS

As stated previously, digital signage has boosted morale and given more creative freedom across Steel Dynamics’s facility. Safety Coordinator Simon Schlatter can create company-wide playlists through Canva and publish that content to multiple screens at once. This revolves around general company information and upcoming meetings. However, individual departments can also supplement that content with their playlists, usually stacked just below the previous one within their layouts. This includes content such as memes, project updates, employee anniversaries and new hires, fun facts, and positive messages, just to name a few. Some breakrooms even utilize YouTube videos to showcase updated safety information and other videos.

Outside of breakrooms, Steel Dynamics is able to publish crucial information to its truckers as well. On certain screens, they showcase a “truckers’ queue” to let staff know who is on shift and which routes they are in charge of. This content is displayed on a huge “Jumbotron” to ensure the information is consistent amongst truckers. From a user perspective, teams have been able to learn the content management system easily, resulting in greater creativity and more content being published. Once staff members realize the benefits of these screens, they react positively and respond to videos and events they see onscreen.
